    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp capable of stopping a discharging luminescent tube without scattering an outer tube or a luminescent tube material during expiration of a service life. SOLUTION: This lamp is provided with a quartz luminescent tube 8 having an electrode rod 2 holding an electrode 1 at a tip end, a metal foil 3 made of a molybdenum foil in which a rear end of the electrode rod 2 is connected at one end, a connection body 5 in which one end is connected to the other end of the metal foil 3, a luminescent part 6 that is a discharge space in which a metal halide is sealed as a luminescent substance, and a sealing part 7 contiguous to both ends of this luminescent part 6. The connection body 5 is sealed with air tightness in a sealing part 7 so that the electrode 1 is positioned in the luminescent part 6, and the sealing part 7 is provided with a void in which air tightness with the outside of the luminescent tube 8 is not maintained in the vicinity of a side end of the luminescent part 6 of the metal foil 3 sealed in the sealing part 7.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of discharge in an outer tube by providing shielding of an insulator in a thermally-actuated element that is connected to an arc tube in parallel together with a starter and is stored in the outer tube. SOLUTION: Preferably, a starter comprises a switching element and a resistor, and an insulator is quartz glass. This high pressure discharge lamp is formed in a structure where, for example, a quartz-made arc tube with 66 mm inter-electrode fixed and supported in an outer tube with 360 mm entire length. A bimetal 6 of a thermally-actuated element is closed at a turning-on time of a power supply, and secondary voltage is applied from a ballast to a glow bulb as the starter and a serial body 8 of resistors to generate pulse voltage in the glow bulb. The pulse voltage generates discharge between a main electrode and an auxiliary electrode, and generates arc discharge between it and the main electrode to light the lamp. Then, heat of the arc tube opens the bimetal 6 to prevent conduction to the glow bulb. The bimetal 6 as the thermally-actuated element is shielded by a quartz-glass-made shielding body 20 with 1 mm thick insulator. Thus, the discharge lamp with high safety can be provided.
