This voltage is compared by a differential amplifier 53 with a value corresponding to the inflow current in a stationary state. Then, a voltage drop circuit 55 is operated through a function generator 54 to control the voltage applied to the converging electrode 3. Consequently, an irregularity in the emission quantity due to a difference in start-up characteristics of the linear cathode in power-on operation is eliminated and an image having good quality having uniform brightness is obtained.

Consequently the dispersion of the electron beam emitting capacity of each line cathode is masked due to the influence of a space electric charge, the dispersion of brightness can be substantially improved.

Even if the DC level and amplitude of the input signal 3 are changed, the optimum DC level is fed to the other input terminal of the differential amplifier 7. Thus, the output dynamic range of the differential amplifier is utilized effectively to the maximum value.
