    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely and correctly measure a viscosity and the like of a liquid by setting a cover for liquid-tightly covering input/output electrodes and a conductive member thereby forming a space to the input/output electrodes and the conductive member in a surface acoustic wave apparatus for measuring characteristic values of the liquid. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave apparatus 40 is composed of a surface acoustic wave device 42 set on a base 41 and having the combed input electrode 44 and the combed output electrode 45 arranged in parallel along a propagation direction of surface acoustic waves on a piezoelectric substrate 43, and a plurality of metallic wires 49a, 49b, 49c and 49d led out from the input electrode 44 and the output electrode 45 respectively. Covers 50a and 50b are set to an upper face of the base, which liquid-tightly cover the input electrode 44, the output electrode 45 and the wires 49a, 49b, 49c and 49d while leaving a sensing face 43a between the input electrode 44 and the output electrode 45, thereby forming spaces S to the electrodes and the wires.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an error from being generated in a detection result due to the instrumental error or the degradation of a surface acoustic wave device and to detect the characteristic value in a wide range of a liquid by using only one characteristic- value detecting apparatus in the characteristic-value detecting apparatus for the liquid. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave device 21 in the characteristic-value detecting apparatus comprises a sensing face 21d. It is operated when a signal from an oscillator 11 is input. It detects the characteristic value such as the viscosity coefficient or the like of the liquid coming into contact with the sensing face. It outputs a signal which expresses its detection result. A microcomputer 13 computes and outputs the characteristic value of the liquid on the basis of the output from the surface acoustic wave device. An adjusting circuit 30 which continuously adjusts the signal amount of the signal is installed on at least one out of the front side and the rear side of the surface acoustic wave device, and it prevents an error in the detection result due to the instrumental error or the degradation of the surface acoustic wave device. When a changeover circuit 35 which changes over the signal amount stepwise is installed instead of the adjusting circuit, a detecting range can be changed over.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and securely determine the extent of deterioration of a liquid in a characteristic value detector of the liquid. SOLUTION: An elastic surface wave device 21 of the characteristic value detector produces a characteristic value signal showing the characteristic value of the liquid in contact with a sensing surface 21d, and a microcomputer 14 calculates the characteristic value of the liquid based on the characteristic signal. The detector further comprises a temperature sensor 23 for detecting a temperature of the elastic surface wave and a storage device 15 for storing a computing equation or a table showing a temperature characteristic regarding a characteristic value of a reference liquid which is not deteriorated. The microcomputer 14 calculates a reference characteristic value at the temperature indicated by a temperature signal based on the temperature signal inputted from the temperature sensor device and the computing equation or the table stored in the storage device 15. The calculated reference characteristic value is compared with the characteristic value of the liquid calculated based on the inputted temperature signal and the reference signal inputted about the same time, and the result of the comparison is shown on a display 16.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a cross length at the end of a weighting electrode and to reduce the diffraction of surface acoustic waves after suppressing the change of frequency characteristics as much as possible. SOLUTION: This surface acoustic wave filter device is provided with a piezoelectric substrate and a weighting electrode 20 and a normal electrode are arranged side by side in the propagation direction of the surface acoustic waves on the substrate. The cross length ai (i is an even number) of respective cross parts where the adjacent electrode fingers of the weighting electrode 20 cross each other is set to a value designed by a design method for optimizing the frequency characteristics, a mini-max method for instance. At the time, even at the time of respectively reducing the cross lengths ai and ai+2 of both cross parts so as to keep the difference ai-ai+2 of the cross lengths of the adjacent cross parts fixed at the end part of the weighting electrode 20, frequency components obtained by the cross parts are maintained almost the same in a desired frequency band.
