    • PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer useful as a component of swelling material, etc., without danger of ignition and inflammation, by copolymerizing an olefin with maleic anhydride in an ester solvent, and reacting the copolymer with an amine in the presence of a dialkyl sulfoxide, etc.
      CONSTITUTION: The objective partially amidated polymer is prepared by (1) copolymerizing (A) an olefin (e.g. diisobutylene) with (B) maleic anhydride in an inert solvent containing at least one solvent selected from ester solvents (e.g. dibutyl phthalate), polyhydric alcohol ether solvents (e.g. diethylene glycol diethyl ether), etc., and (2) reacting the reaction mixture with (C) an amine (e.g. stearylamine) in the presence of a dialkyl sulfoxide and optionally the above inert solvent to effect the amidation reaction.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled partially amidated product in good yields by serial operations, by reacting an amine with a poly(olefin-maleic anhydride) by use of both an ester or a polyhydric alcohol ether and a specified organic solvent.
      CONSTITUTION: In the production of a partially amidated poly(olefin-maleic anhydride) derivative by reacting a poly(olefin-maleic anhydride) with an aliphatic amine or an aromatic amine, a mixed solvent containing (A) an ester and/or a polyhydric alcohol, flash point ≥50°C, and (B) an N,N-disubstituted carboxylic acid amide and/or an N-substituted lactam is used. The mixed solvent can contain, in addition to said solvents A and B, not more than 80wt% hydrocarbon oil, flash point ≥50°C. Example of tis hydrocarbon include light oil, fuel oil and a dialkylbenzene.
