    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pulp treating agent excellent in initial characteristics of paper and excellent in resistance to calendering and to provide a method for producing paper by using the pulp treating agent. SOLUTION: The pulp treating agent is obtained by formulating an alkoxysilane represented by the formula (1): R 1 p Si(OR 2 ) 4-p (wherein R 1 is a 1-6C alkyl group or the like; R 2 is a 1-6C alkyl group; p is an integer of 1-3) with an organic acid and water. In the pulp treating agent, ≥50 wt.% of the alkoxysilane represented by the formula (1) is at least one kind of alkoxysilane selected from a trialkoxysilane represented by the formula (2): R 1 Si(OR 2 ) 3 (wherein R 1 and R 2 are the same as described above) and a dialkoxysilane represented by the formula (3): R 1 2 Si(OR 2 ) 2 (wherein R 1 and R 2 are the same as described above), and water is formulated in an amount of ≥3 mol based on 1 mol alkoxysilane represented by formula (1) and pH (at 20°C) of the treating agent is 2-5.
