    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing hydroxyalkyl cellulose having excellent water solubility from cellulose while retaining high reaction selectivity, and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose obtained by the method, and to provide a method for producing cationized hydroxyalkyl cellulose using the obtained hydroxyalkyl cellulose.SOLUTION: (1) The method for producing hydroxyalkyl cellulose comprises adding a base compound and an alkylene oxide to cellulose to cause a reaction, and in the method, the total addition amount of the base compound is 0.3-1.5 mol per 1 mol of anhydroglucose unit of the cellulose, and the total addition amount of the alkylene oxide is 1.0-3.0 mol per 1 mol of anhydroglucose unit of the cellulose. The method includes: a step of obtaining a reaction mixture by adding 50-95% of the total addition amount of the base compound, and then adding 30-80% of the total addition amount of the alkyleneoxide to react the cellulose; and a step of adding the remaining amount of the base compound to the reaction mixture obtained in the prior step, and then adding the remaining amount of the alkylene oxide to react the remaining cellulose. (2) Hydroxyalkyl cellulose obtained by the method and (3) a method for producing cationized hydroxyalkyl cellulose using the obtained hydroxyalkyl cellulose are also provided.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing alkali cellulose, in which the cellulose polymerization degree decreases little and few bases are used, and to provide a method for producing cellulose ether using the obtained alkali cellulose.SOLUTION: [1] The method for producing alkali cellulose includes: a step 1 for obtaining a cellulose-containing raw material (II) containing cellulose having a crystallinity degree of 10-55% by processing a cellulose-containing raw material (I) with a pulverizer; and a step 2 for obtaining alkali cellulose by adding, to the obtained cellulose-containing raw material (II), 0.6-1.5 mol of a basic compound per 1 mol of an anhydroglucose unit constituting the cellulose and by adding 20-100 mass% of water to the cellulose. [2] The method for producing cellulose ether produces the cellulose ether by means of the reaction between the alkali cellulose produced in the production method and an etherification agent.

[2] The method for producing cellulose ether produces the cellulose ether by means of the reaction between the alkali cellulose produced in the production method and an etherification agent.
