    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction damper and a friction damper unit capable of uniformly press-fitting a sliding material. SOLUTION: This friction damper 10 comprises plate materials 20-38, the sliding material 68 which is fixed to the plate materials 20-38, the other-side plates 44-60 which abut on the sliding material 68, and a pair of fastening plates 65 and 66 which are provided on the outermost portions of the plate materials 20-38. In this case, the sliding material 68 covers a prescribed range around a hole center of a through-hole 72; and a range, in which a frictional surface is equally and effectively pressed, can be identified by a combination of a prestressing steel bar 74, which passes through the through-hole 72, and the fastening plates 65 and 66. This enables the control of a frictional force and the durability of the sliding material 68. Additionally, the plurality of sliding materials and the plurality of the other-side plate materials are provided, and the frictional surface is formed in a multistepped shape. Thus, even if the shape of the friction damper 10 is reduced by reducing the area of the sliding material 68, the whole frictional area does not have to be reduced. The upper and lower base plates are joined to the beams or slabs of the upper and lower floors through a shearing force transmission element and installed.
