    • PURPOSE:To provide high strength and superior toughness at low temp. by heating a steel slab having a specific composition containing Nb so that the central part of the steel slab reaches a temp. in a specific range and then carrying out controlled rolling and accelerated cooling. CONSTITUTION:A slab of a steel having a composition containing 0.01-0.15% C, 0.02-0.60% Si, 0.60-2.0% Mn, 0.005-0.060% Al, and 0.005-0.025% Nb is heated for 30-60min so that the central part of the steel slab reaches a temp. in the range between T deg.C calculated from an equation and (T+50) deg.C, that is, the steel slab is heated at a temp. in a region where the coarsening of austenite grains does not occur, and further, Nb is allowed to enter into solid solution completely. This steel slab is rolled at =50% rolling reduction, and rolling is finished at a temp. between (Ar3 transformation point - 30) deg.C and (Ar3 transformation point + 50) deg.C. Then, accelerated cooling is performed down to 400-600 deg.C at 2-20 deg.C/sec cooling rate. By this method, Nb can be effec tively utilized, and a non heat-treated high tensile steel of >=60kgf/mm excellent in toughness at low temp. can be effectively produced.
