The angle of inclination formed by the inclined surface 13B relative to the opening part is θ, and the distance between two lines formed by intersection of the horizontal plane in contact with an upper surface of the roll 4 and the plane of extension of the inclined surface 13B with the viewpoint installation surface 5 with the distance L of observation from the width end of the paddle 1, is (h), and θ, h, L, and the gap (g) between the nozzle and the roll are in the geometrical relationship of h=g+Ltanθ. θ is preferably >=tan (5/L).

The injected pressure of the molten metal from the nozzle 2 is adjusted so that this paddle length L becomes the prescribed range. Further, the paddle shape is picked up to form the thickness of the strip to the constant, and the injected pressure of the molten metal is controlled so as to hold this contacting angle in the prescribed range to obtain the strip having uniform thickness over the whole length. Then, in the case the paddle length L deviates from the prescribed range because of the variation in various factors, the injected pressure of the molten metal is adjusted.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a cooling roll which enables stable manufacturing of a thin strip for a long time by forming a film, which is a metallic oxide layer held and laminated between sprayed metal layers, in a specific thickness on the surface of a roll barrel made of copper or copper allay. CONSTITUTION:A thin strip is obtained by injecting a molten metal from a nozzle to a cooling roll and rapidly solidifying it on the cooling roll. This cooling roll 5 for manufacturing rapidly solidified thin metal strip is made of copper or copper alloy, and provided with a sleeve 7 having a passage 8 for cooling water on the arbor 6. On the surface of this roll barrel, a film is formed desirably in the thickness of 0.3mm or less, which film is made by holding and laminating a metallic oxide layer 11 having the thickness of 0.005-0.05mm between sprayed metal layers 9, 10 having the thickness of o.os and the shell of 0.2mm. The sprayed metal layers 9, 10 and the metallic oxide layer 11 are desirably made of Cu, Mo or their alloys as the basic materials. Consequently, a cooling roll is obtain which is superior in resistance against wear, erosion, and partial embrittlement as well as in the cooling speed.

The grooves 4 are formed so as to have 0.01 - 1.0mm width, 0.03 - 0.5mm depth and 0.05 - 3.0mm pitch. The arrangements of the grooves in mutually facing rolls are made so that the grooves at the facing surfaces in the rolls are not faced each other. By this method, the strip having no surface and inner defects can be produced without bringing about entwinement of the strip and breakout.
