SOLUTION: The molar ratio of at least one metal element (M) selected from among Sb, Ti, Ge, Sn, and Zn to a sulfo group represented by the formula: SO3X (wherein X is H or Na) is set at 0.01 or higher. The polyester resin, having a cyclic trimer content of 0.1-1.0 wt.%, is obtained by liquid-phase polycondensation, and its increase in the cyclic trimer content after thermal melting is 0-0.1 wt.%. The polyester is produced by using a metal element- containing compound of at least one metal selected from among Sb, Ti, Ge, Sn, and Zn as a catalyst and by causing an organic sulfonic acid compound of formula II (wherein R is a cycloalkyl or the like; X is H or Na; Y is OH or COOH; m is 1-3; and n is 0-3) to be present.
