    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a self-temperature-control type glow plug capable of being comparatively easily manufactured with high reliability and being made to exert a function as a fast heating type and an overshooting characteristic. SOLUTION: This glow plug is provided with a first resistor 10 functioning as a heating body, a second resistor 11 connected to one end thereof in series and made of a material having a positive temperature coefficient of resistance greater than that of the first resistor and a sheath 2 covering the first and second resistors 10, 11 by embedding the resistors in a heat-resisting insulating material powder 6. The sheath 2 is constituted of a small diameter portion 2a having a small sheath diameter for embedding the first resistor 10, a large diameter portion 2b having a large sheath diameter for embedding the second resistor 11 and a tapered portion 2c provided between the small diameter portion 2a and the large diameter portion 2b. The two resistors 10, 11 are connected in an overlapped manner in a wire diameter direction so as to reduce electric resistance and this connecting portion 12 is located to a position corresponding to the tapered portion of the sheath.

    • PURPOSE:To enable long time after glow by setting the size of the tip of a sheath where a first resistor is embedded to be smaller than that of the rear of the sheath where a second resistor is embedded, connecting both the resistors with a connection means having a smaller resistance value by way of a clearance provided between the both resistors. CONSTITUTION:An attempt is made to set a diameter DR of a sheath 2 in its tip where a first resistor 10, which is a heating body for the sheath 2, is embedded, to be smaller than a sheath diameter DB in its rear where a second resistor 11 is embedded in a self-temperature control type glow plug. A clearance GAP is provided between the first resistors 10 and the second resistor 11. The clearance must be at least larger than a sheath diameter DR in its tip where that the first resistor 10 is embedded. Both the resistors 10 and 11 are connected by way of a connection section 12 which is designed to reduce the resistance value in the clearance to substantially zero.

    • PURPOSE:To permit the series connection of a plurality of kinds of spiral heat- generating bodies by welding through a technique, in which working accuracy and the like are not requested, positioning such as coaxial property and the like are facilitated and simplified in the technique. CONSTITUTION:A sheath heater is formed of first and second spiral resistors 3, 4, having different positive resistance temperature coefficient and connected in series, and a sheath 2, in which the spiral resistor bodies 3, 14 are buried in heat resistant insulating powder. The connecting ends 20, 21 of the first and second spiral resistor bodies 3, 14 are formed so as to have the same outer diameter substantially and form a closely contacted wound part having smaller coil pitch than the other coil parts. The connecting ends are abutted against each other and are connected through welding such as laser welding or the like whereby the first and second spiral resistor bodies 3, 4 are connected in series.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate disadvantages such as wrinkle and non-uniform wall thickness at a part where a high reduction occurs by a method wherein a sheath having a small diameter at its extremity end is formed by sheath raw material of heat-resistant metallic material. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical sheath raw material made of heat-resistant metallic material is formed as a substantial cylindrical sheath rough pipe 30 with only an extremity end opening 20a metered through a step-wise drawing work. The extremity end opening is applied as a machining reference in such a way that the extremity end of the sheath rough pipe may become a smaller diameter than that of a rear end side and then the sheath rough pipe is applied with a stepwise drawing work with a punch 50 and a die 51. With such an arrangement as above, its extremity end is made as a small diameter part and concurrently a stepped sheath rough pipe having a large diameter part at its rear end which is continuous in series through a tapered part is obtained. This sheath rough pipe is formed as the sheath for a sheath heater by applying a swaging machining at its outer circumference under a condition in which a resistor is buried and assembled in the heat-resistant insulating powder.
