    • PURPOSE:To obtain high contact efficiency by alternately arranging a split flow plate having a liquid passage consisting of plural slits and a baffle plate in such a shape that it covers the passage in the gravitational direction and having a liquid passage in its periphery in a tower and making the opening area ratio of the liquid passage of the baffle plate larger than that of the split flow plate. CONSTITUTION:A heavy liquid is fed from the upper part of a tower 1 and a light liquid is fed from the lower part and both the liquids whose one liquid becomes a dispersed phase and the other becomes a continuous phase are given continuous countercurrent contact in the tower 1. In the liquid-liquid contacting tower 1 of this type, a split flow plate 2 traversing in the tower 1 and horizontally expanding and having a liquid passage 3 consisting of plural slit and/or holes and a baffle plate 4 expanding so that it may cover the liquid passages 3 of the split flow plate 2 in the gravitational direction and having a liquid passage 5 between its periphery and the inner wall of the tower 1 and having a passage opening area ratio larger than that of the split flow plate 2 are alternatively arranged at suitable vertical intervals. Consequently, the dispersed phase is retained by the split flow plates 2 to form a united layer.

    • PURPOSE:To provide an inexpensive and efficient method for purifying acrylic acid in production of acrylic acid. CONSTITUTION:This purifying method comprises subjecting propylene and (or) acrolein to catalytic vapor phase oxidation using a molecular oxygen-containing gas, cooling the produced gas and (or) absorbing the produced gas into water to afford a crude acrylic acid aqueous solution, subjecting the aqueous solution or a crude acrylic acid aqueous solution obtained by previously removing aldehydes in the aqueous solution by stripping to azeotropic distillation under reflux together with a nonhydrophilic azeotropic agent capable of forming an azeotropic mixture with acetic acid and recovering the purified acrylic acid from the tower bottom of azeotropic distillation tower used. In this method, an azeotropic agent is additionally fed from at least one place which is located more downstream than feed source of the reflux flow of azeotropic distillation tower in addition to the azeotropic agent as a reflux flow and the azeotropic distillation is carried out and acrylic acid substantially containing no acetic acid is recovered from the tower bottom.
