    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a welding apparatus which can carry out a further more high quality and high efficiency welding operation by performing a low heat input welding than before in butt welding of thick steel plates.
      SOLUTION: The welding apparatus for carrying out the butt welding of a pair of materials, which are arranged so as to be opposed to each other in a nearly vertical posture and so as to form an I-shaped groove, comprises a welding torch, a wire supplying means for supplying a welding wire to the welding torch at a specified feed speed, an elevating means for elevating the welding torch along the I-shaped groove, a welding electric power source for supplying a specified welding current to the welding torch, and a control means for successively carrying out the build-up welding of the I-shaped groove from below upward by synchronously controlling the wire supplying means, the elevating means, and the welding electric power source, wherein the control means adopts such a means that the welding wire is inserted into the I-shaped groove from the side thereof, and the tip end of the welding wire is reciprocated between the innermost portion and the outermost portion of the I-shaped groove.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of vertical position welding, which method can efficiently carry out a welding operation while suppressing the increase of a cost for welding even thick steel plates and also maintaining the strength by reducing a heat input, and further to provide a structure welded by the method of vertical position welding.
      SOLUTION: In the method of vertical position welding, an I-shaped groove having a required narrow groove gap is formed between a pair of thick steel plates (1, 1) arranged in the vertical position, and a welding wire (30) projecting from a welding torch (20) of an arc welding machine is inserted into the I-shaped groove from diagonally above with respect to the direction of the thickness of the thick steel plates. Then, the weld metal is laminated in the I-shaped groove by reciprocating the tip end of the welding wire delivered from the tip end of the welding torch in the direction of the thickness of the plates in the I-shaped groove by rocking the welding torch, and by moving the arc welding machine from below upward along the thick steel plates by the thickness of two layers of the welded metal for one reciprocation during one reciprocation of the tip end of the welding wire.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a joining structure capable of excellently joining girder members with each other by using a high-strength bolt joint.
      SOLUTION: The joining structure comprises a splice plate abutted on each side face of a first girder member 10 and a second girder member 10, and a bolt member 4 to couple each of the first and second girder members with the splice plate 3. An end face of the first girder member and an end face of the second girder member are welded to each other by using a predetermined welding material. A weld metal 5 generated by the welding generates a martensitic transformation in the cooling process after the welding. The state of the weld metal when the martensitic transformation is started is defined as a first state, and the state of the weld metal cooled to the room temperature is defined as a second state. The material composition of the weld metal is set so that the expansion or contraction in the second state to that in the first state of the weld metal is below a predetermined permissible value.
