SOLUTION: The pod type propulsion unit 1 is provided with the pod body 3 turnably supported on a hull 2; a turning motor (turning means) 5 for turning the pod body 3 relative to the hull 2; a field coil (super-conductive coil) and an armature coil (super-conductive coil); the super-conductive electric motor 11 having a rotation shaft 8 rotated by a magnetic field generated by these coils and arranged in the pod body 3; a propeller 12 mounted to the rotation shaft 8; a cooling unit 13 filled with the refrigerant for cooling the field coil and the armature coil; a cooling pipe for connecting the cooling unit 13 and the super-conductive electric motor 11; and a turning base 16 arranged with the cooling unit 13 and connected to the pod body 3.
