      SOLUTION: The check valve 94 and the relief valve 95 are arranged within the width of the plunger 60. When the pressure in the pressure oil exceeds a certain amount, a holding valve body 75 moves against a holding spring 76 to be in a valve open state, and the pressure oil flow as indicated by an arrow (1). A spherical second valve body 38 is pressed by pressure oil to be removed from a second valve seat section 47. As a result, the pressure oil flows as indicated by arrows (2), (3) reaching a high oil pressure chamber 88, and is stored there. Since the relief valve 95 is arranged within the width of the plunger 60, the tensioner can be miniaturized in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the relief valve 95.
