    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sleeper for crushed-stone ballast suitable for labor-saving track, dispensing with maintenance over a long period of time and reducing noise.
      SOLUTION: This sleeper 10 is provided with a ballast placing face 14 placed on crushed stones, and a rail laying face 16 for fixing a rail. The sleeper 10 is provided with enlarged heads 22 on the end side rather than rail fastening devices 20. The cross-sectional shape of the enlarged head 22 is substantially rectangular, and the width of a bottom face is almost equal to the width of an upper face. Load applied to the sleeper 10 is applied to the crushed stones from the wide ballast placing face and dispersed. Noise during the travel of rolling stock is reflected only by the narrow rail laying face. The upper face of the enlarged head has the same width as the ballast placing face, and crushed stone compacting work can be performed on the basis of the enlarged heads.
