摘要： PURPOSE:To reduce power spike of short size fuel rod and increase the freedom for nuclear design in fuel assembly for nuclear reactor. CONSTITUTION:In the gas plenum 26 of an ordinary fuel rod 10, a spring 27 for pushing fuel pellets 21 and a spring seat part 28 are arranged. Also in the gas plenum 36 of a short size fuel rod 11, a spring 37 for pushing fuel pellets 31 and a spring seat part 38 are arranged. Both springs 27, 37 and spring seat parts 28, 38 are made of stainless steel. It is only required for the spring seat part 28 to have function of mechanically pushing the fuel pellets 21 and the thickness is ca. 1mm. The spring seat part 38 is required to have functions not only to push the fuel pellets 31 but also to absorb neutron for sufficiently suppressing power spike and its thickness is ca.10mm which is thicker than the spring seat part 28.

In the second region, fuel rods 14 with the medium enrichment level 3 are arranged near the corner sections B-D on the outermost peripheral portion, those with the high level 2 at the other positions on the outermost peripheral portion, and those with the highest level 1 at positions other than on the outermost periphery, where fuel rods 14 with encircled numbers 1-4 are MOX fuel rods and the smaller number indicates the higher Pu enrichment level. In the first region, fuel rods 14 with the low enrichment level 4 are arranged near the corner section A on the outermost periphery, those with the medium level 3 at other positions on the outermost periphery, those with the high level 2 on the second and third layers, and fuel rods G containing gadolinium are mostly arranged in the first region. The kind of the Pu enrichment levels is reduced, the Pu loaded quantity for each assembly can be increased, and uranium can be saved.

By arranging the new fuel assemblies of MOX fuel assemblies 25 in which the change in reactivity is slow, in the areas A and B in this way, a decrease in thermal allowance due to distortion of the distribution of radial output with respect to the reactor core is prevented to smooth the distribution of output. Thus, output can be kept constant throughout the operating period, and thermal allowance can be increased.

The MOX fuel assembly 21 includes a small number of gadolinia-containing fuel rods and few kinds of MOX fuel rods and has a homogenious enrichment distribution in the axial direction. As the kinds of fuel rods and the kinds of enrichment of the MOX fuel rod assemblies are a few, the production of the fuel assemblies becomes simple.
