      SOLUTION: The elevator apparatus comprises a car 1 lifting in the hoistway 8, a balance weight 2 lifting in the opposite direction to the car 1, a main cable 3 for suspending the car 1 and the balance weight 2, the hoist 4 that is positioned over a pit 8a in the hoistway and drives the car 1 and the balance weight 2, and a hoisting machine fixing block 5 that is positioned between a lower part of the hoist 4 and the bottom surface of the pit 8a in the hoistway and fixes the hoist 4. The hoisting machine fixing block 5 is provided with a void space 5a, and an inspecting working block 9 used for maintaining the hoist 4 is folded and is stored in the void space 5a.

Without mechanical fixation of the counter weight 6, inspection cannot be performed and the mechanical fixation cannot be invalidated during inspection, thus providing safe operation.
