    • PURPOSE:To provide a portable type fuel cell which is capable of processing reactive products in the inside of the body of the fuel cell by providing means to accommodate the reactive products due to the operation of the fuel cell or means to absorb the reactive products in the inside of the cell system. CONSTITUTION:A fuel tank 3 is divided into three divisions and an accommodating chamber 8 for absorbent for carbon dioxide, which has a detachable inlet port in an outlet port for the carbon deoxide connected to a fuel electrode, is provided in the upper division, and a tank 9 for product water, which has a detachable inlet port in an outlet port for air connected to an air electrode, is provided in the lower division, and the middle of the tank is for the division for accommodating the fuel. Soda lime, caustic alkali, ethanol amine etc. are used as CO2 absorbent. Starch-acrylonitrile hydrolitic products, cellulose graft products, polyacrylic sodium and polyvinylalcohol cross-linking products etc. are used as water absorbing agent for product water, however, a tank for storing the product water may be installed in a part of the body of the fuel cell instead of the use of the water absorbing agent.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration of the characteristics in the air electrode of a liquid fuel battery that uses methanol as fuel due to the permeation and wetting of an electrolyte by impregnating a base material with polytetrafluoroethylene and heat-treating it. CONSTITUTION:A base material 1 obtained by impregnating carbon paper with a polytetrafluoroethylene solution and treated in the air at 400 deg.C for 20min is coated with a paste type 2 obtained by mixing the polytetrafluoroethylene solution that is used additionally as a water repellent agent and a bonding agent in the active carbon powder and graphite powder to which a solvent is added. Such an air electrode is kept in the N2 gas at 300 deg.C for 30min and is cooled slowly and then is removed. As shown in item 1 of the figure, this air electrode hardly deteriorates its potential in the discharge up to 2,000hr.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration in battery performance due to contactness between anode and air by providing a moistened film to the anode. CONSTITUTION:A layer consisting of a conductive and porous material which can sufficiently hold electrolyte is provided on the catalyst layer of anode. As the conductive and porous material, unwoven cloth or woven close of carbon, metal wool or porous plate can be used but any kind of material can be used so long as it is conductive, porous and has resistance for chemicals so that it is not corroded by fuel or electrolyte. If such a conductive and porous layer is moistened by electrolyte, the anode is kept wet. In case the anorite is drained while the battery is not used, contact between air and anode can be avoided and thereby degradation of battery performance can be prevented.
