    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for permanent-magnet synchronous motors wherein protection for a switching element of a PWM inverter can be obtained without fail even when the rotor shaft of a motor is locked up. SOLUTION: The control method is such that a permanent-magnet synchronous motor is driven by a PWM inverter. If the rotor shaft of the permanent-magnet synchronous motor is locked up and a direct current is passed through a specific switching element of an inverter, this lockup is detected at Step 220. When lockup is detected, the carrier frequency of the PWM inverter is reduced at Step 280. Thus, the switching loss in the switching element is reduced; therefore, the amount of heat generated by the switching element can be reduced and it can be protected without reducing the current passed through the switching element.
