    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To brighten display still more while suppressing increase in power consumption in a color liquid crystal display device having a backlight.
      SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal display panel having a plurality of pixels each of which includes a group of subpixels each having different visible wavelength region for transmission; and a backlight including a light guide plate disposed at the back surface side of the liquid crystal display panel and a prism sheet disposed between the liquid crystal display panel and the light guide plate. On an optical path of the light which proceeds towards the subpixel from the backlight, a complementary reflection filter is disposed. Through the complementary reflection filter, only the light in the visible wavelength region which the subpixel allows transmission is transmitted while the light in other visible wavelength regions is reflected. The prism sheet includes a light transmissive substrate 61 and a plurality of prisms 62 provided on the substrate. The prism 62 has generally the same inclination angle between a first inclined plane in contact with the surface contacting the substrate and a second inclined plane.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve efficiency of using light from a backlight in a color liquid crystal display device having the backlight.
      SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has: a liquid crystal display panel in which a liquid crystal layer is interposed between a pair of substrates; and the backlight which is arranged on a back side of the liquid crystal display panel, wherein the backlight has a light transmission plate arranged on the back side of the liquid crystal display panel, and a light source arranged at the end part of the light transmission plate. A diffraction grating which diffracts and spectrally splits light outgoing from the light transmission plate, and a condensing member which condenses light of each wavelength spectrally split by the diffraction grating in a different position in the liquid crystal display panel for every wavelength region, are arranged between the liquid crystal layer and the light transmission plate. A principal cross section of the diffraction grating is formed in shape having a plurality of grooves which are inclined in a direction separating from the light source according as they go toward the end part of the liquid crystal display panel side from the end part of the light transmission plate side.

In the liquid crystal display device, the diffraction grating is disposed in a direction opposite to the liquid crystal display panel as viewed from the light guide plate via a low refractive index layer 11 having a refractive index lower than that of the light guide plate and is disposed so that the diffraction direction of negative first-order diffracted light of all the light beams of the red light, the green light and the blue light is inclined more at the light source side than the vertical direction of the diffraction grating when viewed at a principal sectional surface parallel to the propagation direction of light of a principal component having the highest intensity of the light among light beams made incident on the light guide plate from the light sources.

With respect to each prism, surfaces other than a first surface facing the base comprise a first region having a reflecting layer and a second region not having a reflecting layer, and the first region is located nearer to a light source than the second region and is formed into a stepwise surface having surfaces approximately parallel with the first surface, and the second region serves as a surface which changes the traveling direction of light emitted from the light guide plate and made incident on the first surface, to a desired direction.
