    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase contrast of a plasma display panel, by weakening preliminary discharge that decreases electric charges accumulated on a dielectric material and a phosphor nearby an electrode in a cell, and to decrease circuit load, by decreasing the instantaneously flowing current. SOLUTION: Erasure of the electric charges on the dielectric material and on the phosphor and generation of space charges are carried out by each weak discharge, with a first erase pulse 6 applied to a Y electrode which slowly rises up to a voltage for repeated discharges, with a priming pulse 3 applied to an X electrode, which slowly rises up to a voltage that exceeds the discharge start voltage, and then with a second erase pulse 7 applied to the Y electrode, which slowly rises up to a voltage for repetitive discharge and thereby suppresses light emission. The phosphors 1 and 2 are excited by an ultraviolet ray (exciting light) which is generated by the electric discharge and the phosphors emit visible light. An image is displayed by the light emission of the desired cell by a desired color.

The width of the discharge space having the phosphor layer of at least one color is different from the widths of the discharge spaces having the phosphor layers of other colors, the first and second electrodes in the discharge spaces having the phosphor layers of at least two colors each have apertures, and the apertures have different areas in the discharge spaces having the phosphor layers of two colors.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent display cells from erroneously functioning due to crosstalk between the adjoining display cells of a plasma display panel, and also to prevent image quality from being degraded.
      SOLUTION: A full surface reset pulse is formed by two reset pulses P1 and P2. The timing of electric discharges D11 and D21 generated at rising of the reset pulse P1 varies depending on a situation of a certain cell which is a discharge space. In subsequent self-erasure electric discharges D12 and D22, however, electric discharges generates almost at the same timing. A second reset pulse P2 is applied to discharge electricity again in the cell, thereby generating write electric discharges D13 and D23 by the second reset pulse P2 in all the cells almost simultaneously, in other words, nonuniformity (variance) in discharge delay is reduced. Thus, the influence (crosstalk) of charges between the upper and lower adjoining display cells is reduced, and normal address electric discharging is surely secured in a subsequent address period.
