    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a filter element having a carbon dust cleaning efficiency and a high dust holding capacity. SOLUTION: The filter element is constituted of an oil impregnated filter medium 1 formed in a pleated state and an impermeable layer 2 formed on the downstream side of the filter medium 1 and controlling at least the permeation of carbon dust from the oil impregnated filter medium 1. A prefilter 3 may be arranged on the upstream side of the oil impregnated filter medium. The impermeable layer 2 may be formed of a coating layer having resistance with respect to the viscous oil infiltrated in the filter medium and this coating layer may be uniform over the whole thereof and may be made large in thickness or content partially. An air permeable cutting-off material (or a filling layer) constituted of a resistant component insoluble in the oil infiltrated in the filter medium may be formed to the trough regions of the pleated parts of the filter element.
