    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the interference between a spot and a ring zone by the pits, which are adjacent to each other in tangential and radial directions, and to obtain optimally reproduced signals by tilting the major axis of the ellipse of the spot against the pit columns on a high density optical disk for an appropriate angle within a specific angular range. SOLUTION: In a semiconductor laser 70, a PN joint surface 700, which emits light beams, is tilted for an angle (90 deg.-θ) against an x-y plane through the rotation about a y direction as an axis. Moreover, the optical axis formed among a luminous flux separating means 92, a collimating lens 91 and a mirror 93 is set to normal against the line which connects the center of an objective lens 900 and the center of an optical disk. By forming the above, the spot formed on a high density optical disk 50 is irradiated under the condition in which the major axis of the ellipse of the spot is tilted for an angle θ with respect to the pit columns. By setting the angle θ to an appropriate value, which is more than 45 degrees and less than 66 degrees, optimally reproduced signals are obtained.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical head which is of a thin type and is miniaturized by arranging a high-density disk optical system and a conventional disk optical system in a same flat plane and also converging a luminous flux after the synthesis performed by using a light synthesizing and separating element and a polarizing element. SOLUTION: The luminous flux reflected at a polarizing beam splitter 7 is made incident on the quater-wave plate 8 made one body with the splitter 7 and is reflected on a mirror surface 9 and it passes forth and back the quater- wave plate 8 to be emitted at the side of the splitter 7. The outgoing light is coverted from an s-polarized light into a p-polarized light and the luminous flux made incident on the splitter 7 again as the p-polarized light passes through it as it is to headed to an objective lens for high-density disk 3. A luminous flux emitted from a laser module for conventional disk 2 is made incident on the spilitter 7 as an s-polarized light and the advancing direction of it is changed to be guided to an objective lens for conventional disk 4. Thus, a recording and/or a reproduction can be performed with respect to disks of one kind or more whose corresponding wavelengths and thicknesses are different.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of eliminating an aberration caused by a thickness difference of a disk substrate and recording/reproducing a disk for two or more types of optical disks different in substrate thickness by a simple structure of no mechanical switching mechanism, capable of recording or reproducing a signal and to provide an optical pickup using the optical disk device. SOLUTION: A laser luminous flux emitted from a first light emitting element are changed into parallel luminous fluxes through a collimator lens, and passed through a luminous flux combining/separating element to be condensed on the thin high-density disk of a disk substrate by an objective lens. A laser luminous flux emitted from a second light emitting element is passed through the luminous flux combining/separating element to enter the objective lens as a dispersed luminous flux, and condensed on the conventional thick disk of a disk substrate. Thus, a spherical aberration caused by a difference in disk thickness is corrected. A signal processing circuit is switched based on the determination result of a disk type determination means.
