    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide spacers for nuclear fuel assemblies including rod contacts which provide a fuel rod with certain elasticity and then limit deflection.SOLUTION: Nuclear fuel spacers include a deflection-limited elastic rod contact 146. Spacers may additionally include a rigid contact without elastic functionality. A degree of deflection may be chosen based on a plastic deformation threshold, maximum fuel rod movement, anticipated transverse loads related to a fuel assembly including inspection, handling, transportation, operation and accidents, and/or any other operating characteristics. Spacers include deflection-limited elastic contacts 461a and/or rigid contacts in a plurality of arrangements within the spacer and/or in contact with a single fuel rod. Spacers are compatible with a simple fabrication method that forms rigid, deflection-limiting, and elastic components from a single substrate. Nuclear fuel spacers are useable with a plurality of fuel assembly types.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods of making nuclear fuel assemblies, and fuel spacers for used in the fuel assemblies.SOLUTION: Fuel spacers include at least one specialized bathtub on an outer perimeter band. Specialized bathtubs include an elastic resistive extension and a corresponding deflection limiter on the same outer face of the perimeter band. The positioning, the spring constant, the length, the number, and other properties of the specialized bathtubs can be chosen based on the desired fuel assembly properties and expected transverse force in fuel shipping and operation, and the specialized bathtubs resiliently protect against the transverse force. The specialized bathtubs can be formed from a simplified stamp operation out of the perimeter band. The bathtubs can be placed on any position(s) on the perimeter band of example embodiment spacers used in nuclear fuel assemblies. The elastic resistive extension provides flexible resistance to a channel, and the deflection limiter provides rigid movement limitation beyond a particular threshold between the channel and the spacers.
