The carrier layer of the detection element comprises γ-alumina and black pigment is compounded with the carrier layer of the comparison element in an amt. of 10-20 wt.%. The compounding amt. of the black pigment in the carrier layer of the comparison element is 15 wt.% and the particle size of the carrier layer of the comparison element is 1.2 times that of the carrier layer of the detection element.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the title gas sensor hard to receive the effect of temp. without attaching a temp. sensor or the like by applying black-body treatment to a comparison element to allow the emissivity of a detection element to approach that of the comparison element. SOLUTION: An alumina powder having platinum supported thereon is mixed with a small amt. of water to form paste which is, in turn, applied to the part molded into a coil shape of a platinum wire and a current is supplied to the coated platinum wire to sinter the wire to obtain a detection element D. In the same way, a comparison element R is produced by using an alumina powder having no platinum supported thereon. A black heat-resistant synthetic resin coating material is sprayed on the comparison element R to sinter the element R. By this constitution, the emissivity of the detection element D is allowed to approach that of the comparison element R. Next, a bridge circuit is constituted by using the detection element D and the comparison element R to obtain a catalytic combustion type gas sensor.

CONSTITUTION: At least a pair of first terminal pins and a pair of second terminal pins 2b are projected at the surface side of a sensor base 1. A very fine resistance wire of a detection element for detecting CO concentration by contact reaction is tensed between the first terminal pins. Similarly, another very fine resistance wire of a comparative element 4 is tensed between the terminal pins 2b. The comparative element 4 and the detection element is partitioned by a partition plate 6. The very fine resistance wire of the comparative element 4 and the detection element is constituted by the platinum wire containing zirconia or yttria of a very small amount in the range of 1.0%, or less, tension strength is heightened twice compared with a conventional platinum wire and TCR characteristics equal to a pure platinum wire is secured.

The CO detector 2 prohibits self diagnosis of the CO sensor 23 during the state signal L, while performs self-diagnosis of the CO sensor 23 when the state signal reaches H. An operation time zone of the water heater 1 is learned with the CO sensor 23, and self-diagnosis is performed in the time zone other than the operation time zone.
