    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is improved in viewing angle characteristics, such as tone reversal, in a simple configuration and is suitable for animation image display as well. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has at least a liquid crystal cell composed of a pair of substrates 9 and 10, at least one of which has an electrode, and which are placed opposite to each other, and a liquid crystal layer 11 including a nematic liquid crystal material held between the substrates and aligned approximately parallel to the surfaces of the pair of substrates during the non-application of voltage, and a first polarizing film 3 and second polarizing film 18 placed to interpose the liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal display device has an optical compensation film 7 (14) between at least one of the first polarizing film 3 and the second polarizing film 18, and the liquid crystal cell. The optical compensation film consists of a composition containing a disk-shaped compound. The molecules of the compound are fixed in the state of approximately perpendicularly aligning the disk face to the substrate faces and the liquid crystal cell has two or more alignment regions in one pixel. The liquid crystal display device is of black display during the non-application of the voltage or during the application of the low voltage.
