    • PURPOSE:To improve the uniformity of the coating thickness and to prevent the damage of an optical fiber with external force, by passing the optical fiber before the coating operation through a device for aligning the fiber using the flow of gas, thereby keeping the optical fiber to the proper position in the coating vessel. CONSTITUTION:The perform rod 10 as raw material of an optical fiber is heated and molten in a spinning furnace 1 and drawn to an optical fiber 11. The fiber 11 is passed through the aligning device 2 and the coating vessel 3, and coated with a coating material such as silicone rubber, epoxy resin, etc. In the above procedure, an inert gas such as Ar, He, N, etc. is introduced into the aligning device 2 from the gas inlets 6A and 6B and blasted through the upper and the lower aligning orifices 8A and 8B. The optical fiber 11 is supported stably at the center of the aligning orifices 8A and 8B by the flow of the gas, and is passed accurately at the center of the die 4 of the coating vessel 2 aligned with the aligning device 2. Accordingly, the uniformity of the thicknss of the coating layer 13 is improved, and the damage of the optical fiber caused by the contact with the inner wall of the die can be prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent an increase of a transmission loss caused by hydrogen of a covered layer of a quartz compound optical fiber by making the covered layer contain a compound having a reactivity to hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:In a covered optical fiber 10, a covered layer 4 is formed on the outside circumference of a covered layer 2. The covered layer 2 has one or both functions of primary coat and buffer coat, and the covered layer 4 has a protective function whose mechanical characteristic is excellent. When a prescribed compound is contained in the covered layer 2 and/or the covered layer 4, the prescribed compound reacts to hydrogen and comes to catch it, and accordingly, even if a lattice defect exists in an optical fiber, the caught hydrogen cannot invade into its optical fiber 1, by which an OH radical is not generated, therefore, a covered optical fiber whose transmission characteristic is stable is obtained extending over a long period of time in which an increase of a transmission loss is scarcely generated. As for the prescribed compound, namely, a compound having a reactivity to hydrogen, it is desirable to use that of a suit able material quality by adjusting it to a suitable quantity, and an organic peroxide can be exemplified. As for a content of the organic peroxide, 0.01- 5wt% is desirable against the covered layer containing it.
