摘要： PURPOSE:To prevent optical fiber from cracking optical fiber when grinding is performed, by causing a micro-protrusion from the end face of a ferrule, and covering perfectly the protruding part of the optical fiber adhered fast to the ferrule with an adhesive. CONSTITUTION:Element wire 20 of a polarized surface storing optical fiber having a stress giving part is adhered fast to inside of a ferrule 22 with adhesives 23 of epoxy type so that the tip of element wire 20 protrudes from the ferrule 22. At this time, the adhesives remaining at the adhering end face A shall preferably be minimized. Then the periphery of the element wire 20 at a part near the end face of ferrule 22 using an acute fiber cutter 24 made of hard material, and pull cut is made in the B direction. Then adhesives 25 are applied to the end face part of the ferrule 22 so that the protruding part of the element wire 20 is covered perfectly with the adhesives. At this time, the thickness of the adhesives shall range 0.1-0.3mm. After this end face processing, grinding shall be made in conventional process.

摘要： PURPOSE:To provide the absolute single polarization fiber having excellent mass productivity without using a liquid metal by dispersing metallic fine particles into a region near the core of a clad. CONSTITUTION:The metallic particles are dispersed into a region 13 of the clad 12 near the core 11 of the single mode fiber consisting of the core 11 and the clad 12. While this region 13 is disposed asymmetricaly with the core 11, >=2 regions may be symmetrically disposed as well. The region 13 is formed to a bow shape and a plane part is formed in the direction along the core 11 but is not limited thereto. There is an effect of surely shutting off one of the two polarization modes orthogonal with each other if the plane part in the direction along the core 11 is formed in the region 13. The electric field parallel with this region cannot exist in the same manner as the liquid metal is made to exist if the metallic fine particles are dispersed into the region near the core in such a manner. Only the polarized waves having he electric field component perpendicular to this region is eventually propagated.

Further, the strain inducing parts 14a and 14b which are arranged opposite each other across the core 11 at right angles to the axis and extend to the 1st clad 12 and 2nd clad 13 have the same refractive index n1 with the 1st clad 12. Here, n2 is between n0 and n1. Consequently, either mode is cut off and in this wavelength range, only one polarization mode is propagated.

摘要： PURPOSE:To propagate light in one of two orthogonal polarization modes by equalizing the refractive index of strain inducing parts, which face each other in a 2nd clad across a core at right angles to the axis, to the refractive index of the 2nd clad. CONSTITUTION:The core 11 of the part of a radius (a) from the center has a refractive index n0 and the 1st clad 12 of the outside part of a radius (b) has a refractive index n1 smaller than n0. Further, the 2nd clad 13 and the strain inducing parts 14a and 14b provided in the 2nd clad have the refracting index n2, which is between n0 and n1. Then the single-mode fiber in double-clad structure is provided with the strain inducing parts 14a and 14b to give the core 11 high birefringence, and then light in one of two orthogonal polarization modes is propagated while its propagation constant becomes larger than that of the clad. Consequently, the optical fiber can be manufactured so that the wavelength range where only the single-polarization mode is propagated is as designed.

When a fault occurs at a position Z in the course of the optical transmission path 1 to cause a coupling between propagation modes, an optical pulse of a mode 2 is generated following the position Z. As the optical pulse converted to the mode 2 is delayed from the optical pulse propagated only by a mode 1, and thus, the position of the fault as mode coupling position in the optical transmission path 1 is calculated according to a specified formula by measuring the delay time.

摘要： PURPOSE:To suppress Brillouin scattering light by providing a regions which vary in bulk modulus of elasticity and density within the section of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The Brillouin scattering light suppressing parts 3 formed of the regions consisting of the media which are largely different in the bulk modulus of elasticity and density from a core 1 and a clad 2 are disposed at >=1 points within the section of the ordinary single mode optical fiber having the core 1 and the clad 2. The Brillouin scattering light is thereby suppressed and the transmission loss of the optical fiber by the Brillouin scattering light is decreased with such a light transmission system or optical fiber sensor which uses a light source of a narrow oscillation frequency width. The noises by the scattered light co-existing in the transmitted light are thus suppressed.
