SOLUTION: Regarding a liquid crystal display panel, which has a liquid crystal layer 5 including negative dielectric constant anisotropy sandwiched between a pair of substrates 1, 8 facing each other and liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer 5 make gradient vertical orientation to at least one of the substrate surface when voltage is not impressed, while liquid crystal molecules tiltingly orients on the substrate surface when voltage is impressed, a pixel part controlling display light and a non-pixel part not controlling display light are provided and the pre-tilting angle of the liquid crystal molecules in the non-pixel part is composed to be smaller than that of the liquid crystal molecules in the pixel part.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the display unevenness and image persistence by long-term use by forming an oriented film having the ion adsorptive power higher than the ion adsorptive power of an oriented film formed on another substrate, on one substrate. SOLUTION: The oriented film 26 is formed to cover TFTs 23, data bus lines 23A, gate bus lines 13B, pixel electrodes 24 and counter electrodes 25 on the glass substrate 21. The oriented film 27 is formed to cover light shielding plates 22A and color filters 22B on the rear surface side of the glass substrate 22 facing the substrate described above. The oriented film 27 is subjected to such a treatment that its ion adsorptive power is made higher than the ion adsorptive power of the oriented film 26. The treatment is executed by forming an org. resin film of, for example, polyimide, etc., on the counter substrate 22 and subjecting the film to a rubbing treatment, then irradiating the entire surface thereof with UV rays. The negative ions by the impurities in liquid crystals are adsorbed by the oriented film 27 and the impurities of the sealing materials, etc., dissolved in the liquid crystals are decreased.

    • PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal element which is bright in a liquid crystal display surface and is high in the contrast of the brightness between on and off by alternately disposing liquid crystals varying in orientation directions without using diffraction gratings. CONSTITUTION: A pair of transparent substrates 12a, 12b facing each other are provided thereon with oriented films 14a, 14b and are arranged apart a spacing T to form a pair. Further, liquid crystals 15 having an ordinary refractive index n0 and extraordinary refractive index ne are encapsulated between a pair of the oriented films 14a and 14b and are arranged alternately with first regions 16a and second regions 16b where the orientation directions of the liquid crystal molecules 15a in the liquid crystals 15 are both parallel with the surfaces of the oriented films 14a, 14b and intersect orthogonally with each other. Further, the liquid crystal element is constituted in such a manner that the relation (ne -n0 )T=λ(2m+1)/2 (m=integer) holds between the spacing T between the oriented films 14a, 14b and the ordinary refractive index n0 and extraordinary refractive index ne of the liquid crystals 15 and the wavelength λof light 17 or the light 17 having a distribution around the wavelength λ.
