摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a driving device simple in its circuit configuration and low in its manufacturing cost by lowering breakdown voltages of respective elements provided in the driving device. SOLUTION: This driving device is provided with a first signal line OUTA whose voltage is fluctuated between a positive voltage (+1/2 V) smaller than a voltage V to be applied to a load 20 and the ground level, and a second signal line OUTB whose voltage is fluctuated between the ground level and a negative voltage (-1/2 V) by switches SW1 to SW3 and ON/OFF of the switches. Thus the breakdown voltages of the respective elements can be reduced to the half of the conventional case by controlling the maximum voltage to be applied to the respective elements in the device to a voltage (1/2) smaller than the voltage V to be applied to the load 20 while applying positive and negative voltages given from the first and second signal lines selectively to the load 20 by the ON/OFF of switches 4, 5.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and the control method of the display device for controlling the power consumption of the display device so as to become small in the display device whose display capacity is large, whose screen is made large in size, which is of high definition and whose power consumption is large in order to make a picture to be high luminance, to make its screen large in size and to make its panel to be multiple color display. SOLUTION: In the control method of the display device in which sustaining discharge pulses are used, a detected signal based on a driving voltage is subjected to an analog-to-digital conversion to be supplied to an arithmetic processing circuit part and the control signal based on the calculated result of the circuit part is supplied to a luminance control circuit controlling the frequency of the sustaining discharge pulses as binary data. The calculation in the circuit part includes the performing of the comparison calculation between the value of the converted signal and a prescribed reference value and the luminance control circuit controls the frequency of the sustaining discharge pulses so that the value of the power consumption of the display device becomes equal to or smaller than a prescribed fixed value based on the supplied binary data.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shoreten an address period for driving plural scanning electrodes by impressing scanning pulses to the scanning electrodes while driving address electrodes in accordance with display data, and in the case of turning on a cell arranged on the intersecting position of both electrodes, overlapping a part of a continuous scanning pulse. SOLUTION: Plural address electrodes are arrayed vertically to a rear glass substrate and a rib (diaphragm) is arranged between plural address electrodes and X and Y electrodes are alternately arranged horizontally to a front glass substrate. A scanning pulse to be impressed to each Y electrode has two periods, i.e., a period having high voltage -Vy1 sufficient for generating electric discharge and a period having lower voltage -Vy2 for pulling electric charge generated by the discharge thereafter and the period of voltage -Vy2 and a succeeding scanning pulse are timewisely overlapped. Provided that the period of voltage -Vy1 is not superposed to the succeeding scanning pulse. In addition, a scanning pulse is impressed to the Y electrode by a single phase driving procedure.

SOLUTION: A planar display device has a display panel 1, which forms a cell section 10 that has a memory function arranged in a matrix manner and electric discharge light emission function. In the device, one of the pair of electrodes 14 and 15, located on a same substrate on which discharge light emission, is conducted is commonly connected. The drive device of the flat display device is provided with a common electrode drive circuit which alternatively applies a voltage to the common electrodes and an electric power recovering circuit 60, which recovers and accumulates electric power, when the common electrode is switched from a high potential to a low potential and applies the power accumulated, when the common electrode is switched from the high potential to the low potential to the common electrode. The circuit 60 is provided with a capacitor element C3, a recovery path XVH, which has an inductance element 64 and a diode DO33 and recovers electric power and an applying path XLG, which has an inductance element 65 and a diode DO34 and applies electric power which is accumulated to the electrode 14.

SOLUTION: Since a consumption current of a high-tension power source Vs for driving a device is made to flow as a peak current, it is converted into a voltage value of a mean current by an integrating circuit, and is converted into a digital value by an A-D converter 131, to be fetched by an arithmetic processing part 132. The arithmetic processing part 132 compares the digital value with a preset reference value, and outputs the present set value of brightness as it is from output ports (P01-06) when the digital value is lower than the reference value, and decreases the present brightness value to operate an APC function when the digital value is higher than the reference value. A brightness control circuit 14 performs a variable control of the number of sustained pulses (discharge frequency), and performs a brightness control (power consumption control) of the whole screen based on a control signal for the set value of brightness.

SOLUTION: During a reset period after finish of a sustained discharge period, erasing discharges are executed respectively by applying pulse voltages having mutually different waveforms between a first erasing discharge period having, as an object, lighting cells which were lit during the preceding sustained discharge period and a second erasing discharge period having, as an object, not only lighting cells but also non-lighting cells which were not lit during the preceding sustained discharge period. Hereby, a feeble wall charge which was not completely erased during the first erasing discharge period, namely, the feeble wall charge accumulated on the non-lighting cells by being influenced by the lighting cells, can be erased during the second erasing discharge period. Therefore, the non-lighting cells which are not to be lit essentially are prevented from being lit during the next address period and sustained discharge period, to improve a driving voltage margin.

CONSTITUTION:The value from a high voltage generating circuit 30 to a high voltage control circuit part 29 is different between an address period and a trickle discharge period. An external high voltage VS is supplied as it is in the address period, but in the trickle discharge period, a variable high voltage VS+alpha which is adjusted according to the current display rate of the display data is supplied. Therefore, the level of the maintaining pulses VS in the trickle discharge period varies with the display rate. Further, the luminance of a screen varies in proportion to the level of the maintaining pulses VS, so the level of the adjusting voltage alpha (data stored in a data converting ROM 32) is optimized to display a high-gradation display part and a low-gradation display part with correct lightness even in case of, for example, a 256-gradation or more gradation display.
