    • PURPOSE: To obtain porous granular chitosan having uniform particle size, and uniform fine pores on the surface of the sphere or the broken surface, and suitable as a stationary phase of chromatography, by preparing a concentrated chitosan solution from a chitosan having low molecular weight, and dripping the solution into a basic solution to effect the coagulation of the chitosan solution.
      CONSTITUTION: A low-molecular weight chitosan having an average molecular weight of 10,000W230,000 is dissolved in an acidic aqueous solution (e.g. aqueous solution of acetic acid, dichloroacetic acid, etc.) to a concentration of 2W20wt%, and the solution is dripped into a basic solution composed of a basic substance (e.g. NaOH, ammonia, etc.) and water and/or an alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc.). The obtained spherical coagulum is washed with water and dried to obtain the objective product.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain a low-molecular-weight chitosan useful as fibers, a filler for chromatography, a carrier for immobilized enzyme, etc., easily and stably without causing reduction in content of amino group, by heat-treating chitosan in an aqueous solution of sodium perborate.
      CONSTITUTION: A high-molecular-weight chitosan obtained from chitin existing in the natural world is heat-treated with an aqueous solution of sodium perborate having preferably 0.07W17g/l concentration usually at 25W50°C, to give a low- molecular-weight chitosan.
      EFFECT: Only glucoside bond can be selectively scissored without influencing amino group of high-molecular-weight chitosan, and a chitosan having any molecular weight can be obtained only by determining concentration, treating time and temperature of the aqueous solution of sodium perborate as treatment conditions.
