      SOLUTION: The passenger conveyor is provided with an inverter device 8 for changing the number of revolution of a driving motor 6 and a mechanical brake machine 7 for braking rotation of the driving motor 6. This passenger conveyor is also provided with a plurality of stop signal generating means and an operation stop determining means 14 for generating a first stop instruction for braking in a short time with the mechanical brake machine by determining a signal from these stop signal generating means, a second stop instruction for braking in a long time with the inverter device 8, and a third stop instruction for stopping in a shorter time than the second stop instruction with the inverter device 8.
