    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for etching a glass substrate for the purpose of reducing the thickness of a glass substrate for a liquid crystal display device, by which flaws or the like on the glass surface become smaller and the flatness of the glass surface is improved. SOLUTION: A thin-film transistor element is formed on a first glass substrate and a color-filter element is formed on a second glass substrate. The faces on which the elements are formed are arranged to face each other and the first glass substrate and the second glass substrate are stuck through a sealing material to form a glass substrate pair 10 having a plurality of liquid crystal display panels. The glass surface is flattened by putting the glass substrate pair 10 into a first liquid tank 21 and preforming a first polishing by a chemical polishing liquid A having small polishing force, and subsequently thinned to a desired thickness by a chemical polishing liquid B in a second liquid tank 23.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a thickness of a liquid crystal display, and to prevent the generation of cracks, in a miniaturized liquid crystal display.
      SOLUTION: A portion of a TFT substrate 10 to which a lower polarizer 15 is adhered has a thin thickness, and the periphery of the TFT substrate including a terminal 40 has a thick thickness. A portion of a counter substrate 20 to which an upper polarizer 25 is adhered has a thin thickness, and the periphery of the counter substrate except for one side has a thick thickness in a U shape. Accordingly, in adhering the upper polarizer 25 to the counter substrate 20, a foreign material is hardly entangled. By applying chemical polishing to edges of the TFT substrate 10 and edges of the counter substrate 20, the edges 13 are rounded, whereby a probability of the generation of cracks caused by an impact or the like from the outside can be reduced.
