    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid polymer membrane type water electrolyzer where, by a compact structure in which storage tanks for generated gaseous oxygen and hydrogen are integrated, thus their movement and storage are made convenient, further, the stored gaseous oxygen and hydrogen can be pressurized to the atmospheric pressure or above, and the gases can be fed to distant places.
      SOLUTION: The solid polymer membrane type water electrolyzer comprises: a solid polymer electrolytic membrane 1; an oxygen pole 2 and a hydrogen pole 3 brought into contact with both the faces thereof; separator plates 4 provided adjacent to the outside of both the electrodes, having passages for water and generated gases, and constituting a power collector; fixed plates 6 made of a nonconductive stock; and storage tanks 7 for storing water and generated gases. Each fixed plate 6 incorporates a pressing stock 5 with a flow passage, the oxygen pole 2 and the hydrogen pole 3 are pressed against the electrolytic membrane 1 by the stocks 5, the storage tanks 7 sandwich them from the outside of both the fixed plates 6, and the whole is integrated by tie bolts. Further, each storage tank 7 has a replenishment hole 9 at a position higher than the level of electrolytic water, and has an exhaust hole 8 for the produced gases.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode where an internal resistance is reduced while maintaining an energy density.SOLUTION: Projections and depressions are formed for an active material layer 12 to thereby obtain different thicknesses of the active material layer 12 with respect to a current collection layer 11 for the projections and the depressions. Therefore, in parts 33 where the depressions are formed and a distance to the current collection layer 11 is short, an electrical internal resistance decreases. Also, the projections and depressions of the active material layer 12 is formed through application of a force to the active material layer 12. Consequently, there is no change in total amount of active material particles contained in the active material layer 12. As a result, when the projections and depressions are formed for the active material layer 12, there occurs no change in energy density of the active material layer 12 between before the formation of the projections and depressions and after the formation.
