摘要： PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst which has high heat resistance and can stably remove three components; CO, HC, and NOx; not only in an initial stage but also a long duration in a ternary-catalyst, for which platinum, palladium, and rhodium are used as catalyst components. CONSTITUTION: A catalyst for exhaust gas purification comprises a catalytic layer of a mixture consisting of a catalyst carrying activated alumina which carries 1-5wt.% of metal catalysts of platinum and rhodium, or palladium and rhodium, or platinum and palladium and rhodium; cerium oxide stabilized by zirconium, or zirconium together with rare earth metal elements (except cerium); and a refractory inorganic oxide mainly containing activated alumina, and a catalyst carrier carrying the catalyst layer on the surface. The catalyst may be used even at a site immediate under a manifold where gaseous components are at high temperature and alter remarkably.

CONSTITUTION:A solution containing a platinum group catalytic metal compound such as a platinum compound or a rhodium compound is brought into contact with a highly active ceria powder having a specific surface area of 100m /g or more and the impregnated ceria powder is subsequently baked to obtain a platinum group catalyst supported ceria catalyst powder. Next, this ceria catalyst powder and an activated alumina powder are mixed to prepare a slurry which is, in turn, applied to a carrier base material and the coated one is baked. A platinum group catalytic metal is further supported on the catalyst support layer. The catalyst thus obtained is enhanced in HC and CO purifying capacity while it keeps NOX purifying capacity.
