    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique whereby the capacity of a mask can be reduced more than in conventional constitutions.SOLUTION: The recording apparatus encodes masks provided corresponding to passes used for thinning out recording data at the time of multi-pass recording, and stores in a memory. The recording apparatus includes: an assigning means which assigns different codes with respect to pixels that indicate dot-on and are held in the masks provided corresponding to the passes, depending on for which pass of mask processing they are used; and an encoding means which generates index data indicating pixels that show dot-on and are held in the masks corresponding to the passes by using the different codes, and which generates encoded data by encoding the index data. The encoding means generates the encoded data by determining an assignment relationship of the different codes with the passes by the assigning means so that the encoded data becomes smaller than the size of original masks.
