SOLUTION: This sodium aluminate is obtained using an alumina material which contains, as main components, Al2 O3 components of low impurity contents, such as bauxite, aluminum hydroxide, and alumina, a soda raw material which contains Na2 O-rich components, such as caustic soda and soda ash, and a silica material, such as silica powder, in such a condition that trace impurities, such as K2 O, CaO and Fe2 O3 are permissible within the limits of up to 0.1wt.%, respectively, and 0.5wt.% in total of them, adjusting the formulation ratios so that the mol ratio of Na2 O to Al2 O3 in the clinkers is 0.7-1.3, SiO2 content is 6wt.% or less, mixing well so that γ-NA formed by addition of SiO2 is contained in a quantity of 20 wt.%, calcining the mixture at 1000-1250 deg.C, and crushing and pulverizing.

In a preferred embodiment, the chlorine content of the starting mixture is adjusted to 0.1-12wt.%, while that of the fired product is reduced to less than 0.1wt.%. The fired product is useful as a hydraulic composition, for example, a material for cement, mortar or concrete.
