    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compensate the change of a display state and to prevent the temperature dependency of the display state by changing a driving condition in accordance with the temperature of a display area or its periphery. SOLUTION: A temperature sensor 25 detects the temperature of an active matrix panel 24 or its periphery and supplies temperature data 26 to a temperature compensation circuit 27. The circuit 27 stores the previously set driving condition to each temperature in a ROM, and decides the driving condition of the liquid crystal in accordance with the temperature. The driving timing in the case of compensating the temperature dependency by voltage modulation is set as shown in the conventional manner. As for the driving timing in the case of prolonging a gate-on period; a method in which the length of the scanning period of one frame is changed according to the temperature and a method in which the length of the scanning period of one frame is fixed and the length equivalent to prolongation of the gate-on period is superimposed on the gated on period of a previous line are considered. Thus, the stable display which is not influenced by temperature change is realized and use in a wide temperature range is attained.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device suppressing an inversion domain occurring from around a non-pixel part, and having a wide drive margin. SOLUTION: A drive voltage generation means 104 is controlled by a DC voltage application control means 107, and a first DC voltage is applied to a scanning line electrode or an information line electrode forming two adjacent pixels of a liquid crystal panel 101, and then, a liquid crystal in a gap part between adjacent pixels, having bistability and having characteristics with different sizes of threshold values imparting respective stable states is constituted so as to become one side stable state. Then, thereafter, a second DC voltage having a polarity dissolving the difference between the threshold values of the liquid crystal is applied to the scanning line electrode or the information line electrode, and then, the difference between the threshold values of the liquid crystal in the pixel is dissolved.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reflection type liquid crystal element large in display capacity, sufficient in brightness, and capable of realizing easy-to-view color display by constituting one picture element constituting a display picture of plural display units displaying different colors at the time of selection and making the display unit different in liquid crystal layer thickness from each other for every display color. SOLUTION: An oriented control film 3 is formed on a base plate 1 side and a low resistance film 7 is formed on a base plate 4 side. In order to change liquid crystal layer thickness by every display unit, a liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting film 5 having different thickness by every electrode corresponding to each display unit is formed on the base plate 1. Since the liquid crystal layer thickness is set to be different in display units by the film 5, the different color is displayed by every display unit so as to realize full color display. Ferroelectric liquid crystal in a double refraction mode is used, so that the wide angle-of-visibility characteristic is obtained. Namely, by changing the liquid crystal layer thickness, the color display is performed without using a color filter, and trouble such as the loss of light quantity is not caused and bright display is realized.
