      SOLUTION: An ink jet printer 4 includes: an authentication device 19 provided on a device body 40; IC tags 21A to D provided on cartridges 18A to D and able to communicate with the authentication device 19 by means of an RFID technology; a light source 12 provided on the device body 40 and able to illuminate a cartridge attaching portion 17; an attachment/detachment detection sensor 28A to D able to detect whether the cartridges 18A to D are attached to the cartridge attaching portion 17 or not; and a control device 20 for turning on the light source 12 when the authentication device 19 has received predetermined information from the IC tags 21A to D. When the detachment of the cartridges 18A to D from the cartridge attaching portion 17 is detected, the control device 20 turns on the function of the authentication device 19. Conversely, when the attachment of the cartridges 18A to D to the cartridge attaching portion 17 is detected, the control device 20 turns off the function of the authentication device 19.
