CONSTITUTION:This device is provided with a storage means in which external form line data of the cloth end of working cloth, sewing margin data and sewing pitch data are stored, at the time of generating sewing data, in the case it is performed to a vertical differential sewing machine of a type for feeding the upper cloth UW and the lower cloth DW by each moving device 32, 46 for the upper cloth and the lower cloth. In such a state, based on data read out of the storage means, the number of needles A of a seam forming line to be formed in a position separated by a sewing margin portion from the cloth end of the working cloth is calculated. Also, based on the data read out of the storage means in the same way, a reference position B corresponding to a sewing position of the cloth end of the working cloth is calculated, and the obtained data A, B are stored as sewing data in a sewing data storage means. A cloth end shape of the working cloth is read by an external form line reading means and stored.

Then, when the existence of a cloth is detected, the detecting motion is advanced in the opposite direction to the cloth, and when no existence of a cloth is detected, the detecting motion is advanced to the cloth side. By this method, the location of a cloth end can be most efficiently and quickly researched.

CONSTITUTION:An upper fabric detecting mechanism 10 has an upper fabric sensor mounting block 14 which is arranged on the upper side of a fabric receiving plate 12 and a fabric edge detecting sensor 16 which is accommodated in a sensor housing 14a formed at the left edge of the upper fabric sensor mounting block 14. Detecting lights are projected in a dot line intersecting the edge of an upper fabric UW from the tips of optical fibers A1-A10 through a first prism 20a and second prism 22a to detect the position of the edge of the upper fabric UW by the reflecting lights. Then, the center point of a circle which passes through three points relating to the detected edge of the fabric is obtained, and relative position of the center point and a set position in the fabric feeding direction is calculated. A fabric feeding device is controlled based on the relative position of the center point and the set position so as to make the sewing margin uniform.
