SOLUTION: There is provided the mold 1 where the surface of a base material 2 is formed into a predetermined shape by an electric discharge machining, wherein a machining deteriorated layer 3 due to the electric discharge machining is not removed and remains as it is on the surface of the base material 2 and, when a stress in the compression direction is added to the machining deteriorated layer 3, a residual stress in the compression direction is generated.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for modifying a steel surface by which the oxidation of the steel surface is prevented to avoid adverse effect such as strength deterioration. SOLUTION: The steel surface modifying apparatus 1 includes: a covering member 4 having an application port 7 for applying laser beam, and covering a surface of a tool steel W; a gas cylinder B for feeding inert gas into the covering member 4; and an application nozzle 2 of a laser beam application device for applying the laser beam to the tool steel W through the application port 7. When reforming the steel surface, the covering member 4 is placed on the tool steel W (the covering step), and the laser beam is applied through the application port 7 of the covering member 4 from the application nozzle 2 while introducing inert gas inside the covering member 4 from the gas cylinder B (the application step). Thus, the surface of the tool steel W is reformed. In this condition, the surface of the tool steel W is under an inert gas atmosphere, and the adverse effect such as strength deterioration caused by the oxidation of the steel surface is avoided.
