    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer compound capable of forming an alignment film which has sufficient aligning performance to a liquid crystalline compound, which has mechanical strength and heat resistance, and which is excellent also in adhesion with an optical anisotropic film obtainable by the alignment of the liquid crystalline compound, especially the optical anisotropic film containing a polymer of the polymerizable liquid crystalline compound obtainable by the polymerization in an aligned state, and a composition for the alignment film, containing it, as well as an alignment film obtainable by using such the composition, an optical element and an optical head device.SOLUTION: The polymer compound comprises polymerized units derived from a fumaric acid diester and polymerized units having a radically polymerizable group in a side chain. By using this polymer compound, the alignment film is prepared. The optical element having this alignment film and the optical anisotropic film is formed and used as a retardation plate 4 having mechanical strength and heat resistance, and good reliability without peeling. An optical head device is constituted by using it.
