    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method of a phase modulation element having low speckle contrast of a displayed video, to provide a phase modulation element having simplified structure and to provide a projection display.
      SOLUTION: The phase modulation element where transparent electrodes each comprising three or more stripe electrodes formed on a surface of a transparent substrate are opposed to each other so that longitudinal directions of the stripe electrodes are orthogonal to each other on the surfaces of the two transparent substrates, and a liquid crystal is held between the two transparent substrates, is given two or more patterns different at least in time so that phases of light transmitted through partitions adjacent to each other are made different using a driving method of a dot matrix system. Accordingly, speckle contrast can be suppressed. Simplification of electric wiring lines of the phase modulation element and miniaturization of a voltage controller can be achieved by sharing the electric wiring lines connected to the plurality of stripe electrodes and the voltage controller.
