    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an inexpensive carbonaceous raw material with a low ash content and excellent self-sintering properties, a method for manufacturing a high strength coke, and the high strength coke. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the carbonaceous raw material comprises a slurry heating step for executing a heat treatment of a slurry comprising coal and an aromatic solvent, a separating step for separating the heat-treated slurry into a liquid component with the coal dissolved and a solid component comprising an ash content and insoluble coal, an ashless coal obtaining step for obtaining ashless coal by removing the aromatic solvent from the liquid component, and an ashless coal heating step for applying a heat treatment to the ashless coal so as to obtain the carbonaceous raw material. The volatile content of the carbonaceous raw material measured by the method defined in JIS M 8812 is 24 mass% or more and less than 35 mass%. The method for manufacturing the coke differs from the method for manufacturing the carbonaceous raw material in that the ashless coal heating step is substituted by a dry distillation step.
