    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform efficient elevator operation by controlling the tensile strength of a rope appropriately in relation to the vibration of a building. SOLUTION: A weight loading device 31 is coupled to the compensation sheave 7 arranged on the side of a hoistway floor section, and a vibration sensor 35 for detecting the vibration quantity of the building and an elevator control panel 37 are installed in a machine room 2 on top of the hoistway. When the sensor 35 detects that the vibration quantity of the building exceeds the predetermined vibration quantity due to strong wind or earthquake, for example, the elevator control panel 37 makes the tensile strength of the rope increase up to specified tensile strength with a certain changing rate, and based on the position data of an elevator car 5, a tensile strength increasing or decreasing directive is transmitted to the weight loading device 31 for returning the increased or decreased tensile strength to normal tensile strength with a certain changing rate when the car 5 passes through a specified floor before reaching the predetermined floor. As a result, a hydraulic jack 34 constituting the weight loading device 31 displaces upward and downward for varying the tensile strength of the compensation sheave 7.
