摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of effectively suppressing light leakage even when a liquid crystal can not completely maintain a homeotropic alignment state but is fixed. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 1 includes substrates (3, 4) opposing to each other to sandwich a liquid crystal layer 2 containing a liquid crystal with a variable alignment state, and a first polarizing plate 5 and a second polarizing plate 6 interposing the opposing substrates with the absorption axes of the polarizing plates intersecting orthogonal to each other, wherein a birefringent layer 7 is formed by polymerizing a polymerizable liquid crystal with an optical axis inclined with respect to the thickness direction of the birefringent layer 7 between the first polarizing plate 5 and the second polarizing plate 6. Since the optical axis of the birefringent layer 7 is inclined in the direction of the absorption axis of either the first polarizing plate 5 or the second polarizing plate 6 with respect to the thickness direction of the layer 7, the liquid crystal display device 1 can effectively suppress light leakage even when the liquid crystal can not completely maintain a homeotropic alignment state but is fixed.
