On the basis of the envelope information Pe and the power information Pp, a noise determination section 34 classifies the environmental noise by referring to a noise parameter database 35 to create noise information indicative of the classification result. A category selecting section 36 selects a category of the musical piece according to classification of the environmental noise, based on the noise information. For example, when the environmental noise is classified into "vehicle", a category "rock" is selected. When the environmental noise is classified into "tea room", a category "classic" is selected.
