    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide systems and methods that reduce battery consumption of mobile devices during periods of inactivity intermixed with traffic bursts in wireless communications systems.SOLUTION: A semi-connected mode is introduced to a base station 302 and a mobile device 304 of a wireless communication system for fast traffic recognition while operating the mobile device 304 in a power reduced state. The base station 302 and the mobile device 304 starts or ends the semi-connected mode in accordance with a start message or an end message for the semi-connected mode and a link is maintained during the semi-connected mode. The mobile device 304 operates in the semi-connected mode with all base stations within an active set of the mobile device. Further, mechanisms are provided for reporting pending data to the mobile device while avoiding latency associated with paging channels.
