摘要： PURPOSE: To enable electrical addressing by arraying the spiral planes of cholesteric liquid crystals perpendicularly to the direction of an electric field and selectively reflecting the light of the wavelength determined by the spiral pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION: A display 10 consists of a pair of glass or plastic supporting bodies 11, 12 and a solid polymer sheet 13 contg. the phase-dispersed liquid droplets 14 of chiral liquid crystals. The inside surfaces of the glass supporting bodies 11, 12 have transparent conductive electrode films 15 connected to an AC power source 16. In such a case, the spiral planes of the chiral liquid crystals in the liquid droplets 14 are arranged perpendicularly to the electric field applied across the material 13 by the electrode 15. The incident light on the supporting body 11 or 12 is partly reflected. The reflected light has the wavelength determined by the spiral pitch of the chiral liquid crystals and has the circularly polarized light determined by the direction of the distortion of the chiral material. The non-reflected light transmits the display and is not absorbed. As a result, the electrical addressing is made possible.
